DxO Labs Tests The iPhone 6; Gives It The Highest Smartphone Score

Even Sony and Samsung are no match for the iPhone 6’s camera and video quality.

DxO labs has finally tested the recently launched iPhone 6. The reviewers tested both the iPhone 6 and the bigger iPhone 6 Plus as well that comes with Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS). The results were very impressive as per the team at DxO Labs. Apart from giving the iPhone the highest score for a smartphone ever, it is the device’s video recording capabilities that clearly impressed them.

According to the team that tested the smartphone, the iPhone 6 and the 6 Plus deliver very good and accurate exposure overall. This is accompanied by an impressive autofocus system that works well both in low light and bright light (thanks to those focus pixels). Surprisingly the handset also performs well compared to the Nokia Lumia 1020 (they don’t seem to have tested the Samsung GALAXY K Zoom so far), which is a bit odd since the latter comes with a xenon flash. As for the cons, they did notice some ghosting and fringing on the iPhone 6 (the OIS may have helped the 6 Plus in this case) along with luminance noise that is visible in low light images.

As for the video, the DxO Labs team was blown away with the quality and claimed that they had never seen such video recording quality from a mobile device; though there were indeed over exposure problems that were pretty prominent.

The team gave the image quality of the iPhone 6, 83 points and the iPhone 6 Plus an 84. This again beats the recent champ, the Sony Xperia Z3 at 81 points. For video, the team gave the iPhone 6 80 points and the iPhone 6 Plus a 79.

Overall, the new iPhone beat the current crop of smartphones by 3 whole points with 82 points for both models; beating the Samsung GALAXY S5 (at 79 points) that was the earlier the benchmark for smartphone cameras.
