While many will tell you that Android is all about the hardware, clearly, it isn’t. Not any more. With Android Lollipop sailing smooth on many older devices (Moto X 1st gen for instance), we think it has come to a point that hardware and software have finally found a balance in the Android space. This would now be similar to what we have on iOS or on Windows Phone.

Clearly, a Snapdragon 801 is not old. More importantly, a Snapdragon 810 chipset will deliver a boost to graphics and gaming, but most android games even with their Quad HD displays offer very little improvement, apart a from a drop in the frame rates, or with batteries trying to keep up.

Frankly speaking, Android gaming nor its apps are ready for Quad HD displays, in a way that India is not ready for 4K TVs with the lack of programming.

Big titles like Real Racing 3 still up scale from 720 x 1280 to higher on screen resolutions. So no matter how pixel-dense your screen is, it will still have those jagged edges that may appear less jagged on a 1080 x 1920 pixel display since the output is the same.

Apps that are built for the iPhone 6 Plus however upscale to 1242 x 2208 before sampling down back to a decent 1080 x 1920 native on screen resolution, so things have been optimised to the tee out there.

Going through the OnePlus forums, it clearly is evident that there were many fans who mentioned that they will not need to upgrade to the OnePlus 2.

There are two reasons for this:

Firstly, we have a group of users who may have recently purchased a OnePlus or users who have been using a OnePlus for a year now. This category would certainly not see the need to upgrade because they have the necessary hardware that will work well with the next two Android updates (from Google). They have no need for the the new fingerprint sensor. Not right now, because Android M is not out yet. So its not in use as much manufacturers would need it to be.

Secondly, we have the next group of upgraders. Those who are either new to Android or don’t have a liking for Google’s Nexus 6. These could also be existing buyers who will switch simply for the upgrades. The new Quad HD display, the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset, 4 GB RAM (do you really need 4 GB?) and not to mention a hopefully better camera will find buyers.

So there you have it. Should you upgrade to a OnePlus 2? Figure out which of the above groups you belong to and you will know the answer.

We say no, unless its the specs and the bragging rights that you are after or if you are not satisfied with the OnePlus One’s camera.
