Top Five Budget Smartphones With HD Screens

Display is one of the most important aspects of a smartphone, and thankfully many domestic brands seem to have acknowledged that fact. HD screens, once limited to top-end smartphones are now within the reach of budget buyers. However, not all 720p screens are made equal. Just because two screens have the same resolution, it does not imply that their picture quality is as good. That’s why we’re here to help you pick a quality screen at an affordable price. While compiling this list, we’ve also made sure that these handsets don’t just offer pretty screens, but also come across as good smartphones.

Lava 504Q
Price: Rs 13,500

The Iris 504Q is the cheapest 5-incher to make use of OGS (One Glass Solution) display technology. As you may already know, this method eliminates the space between your display and touchscreen, allowing you to almost touch what's on your display. The screen has pixel dimensions of 720x1280, which provides sharp images. Another thing worth mentioning here is this IPS display's ability to produce vibrant colours. The only drawback here is the lack of scratch resistant glass. In addition to a very good display, the phone features a MediaTek quad-core processor clocked 1.2 GHz, 8 megapixel camera, 1 GB of RAM, 4 GB of internal storage (1.7 GB user accessible), microSD card slot, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, 3G, and 2000 mAh battery. Panasonic P51
Price: Rs 18,500

This is one of the best 5" cellphone screens you can get under Rs 20,000. With pixel dimensions of 1280x720, the display is quite sharp. Since it's an IPS panel, the colour reproduction is impressive. The viewing angles are wide, and there's nothing to complain about the sunlight legibility. The display sports an oleophobic layer, which helps it remain smudge free. For scratch resistance, Panasonic has used Asahi Dragontrail glass, which is claimed to be better than the popular Gorilla Glass. Apart from a superb display, the phone offers a 1.2 GHz quad-core CPU (MediaTek chipset), 1 GB of RAM, 4 GB of internal storage (1.22 GB is user accessible), microSd card slot, 8 megapixel image sensor, Wi-FI, Bluetooth, 3G, dual-SIM functionality, and 2500 mAh battery. XOLO Play
Price: Rs 16,500
The XOLO Play T1000 is the only single-SIM handset in this list. It sports a 4.7" IPS screen with pixel dimensions of 720x1280. The screen is sharp and delivers vibrant colours. Similar to the LAVA Iris 504Q, the T1000 features OGS (One Glass Solution) display technology. Considering the phone's price, the contrast is very good. The blacks are also relatively deeper than its competitors. The viewing angles are wide, and the sunlight legibility is decent too. The only downer here is the lack of scratch resistant glass. Besides an impressive display, the XOLO Play is known for its Tegra 3 chipset that consists of a quad-core 1.5 GHz CPU and 12-Core ULP GeForce GPU. Other key features include an 8 megapixel rear camera, 1 GB RAM, 4 GB internal storage, microSD card slot, and 2000 mAh battery. Don't forget to check out our review.

XOLO Q1000
Price: Rs 14,000

XOLO has been using some quality displays on their handsets, and its second entry in this list only backs up that fact. The Q1000 sports a 5" IPS screen with pixel dimensions of 720x1280. Similar to the Panasonic P51, the XOLO device features a scratch resistant Dragon Trail Glass. Like every 720p cellphone screen in this list, this one is sharp. The colour reproduction is great, and so are the viewing angles. To accompany this screen, there’s a Mediatek MT6589 chipset with 1.2 GHz quad-core CPU and PowerVR SGX544 GPU. Other features include 8 megapixel camera, 1 GB of RAM, 4 GB of internal storage, MicroSD card slot, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, Micro-USB port, Dual-SIM (GSM), Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean), and 2100 mAh battery.

Micromax Canvas 4
Price: Rs 18,000

The Canvas features a 5" screen with pixel dimensions of 720x1280. It's an IPS type panel with aspect ratio of 16:9. Thanks to the Corning Gorilla Glass, the display is scratch resistant. The screen is bright, which somewhat helps with the sunlight legibility. Although the blacks could have been better, the overall colour reproduction is quite decent. While it may not be the best, it’s still one of the better HD screens in this price segment. The phone is powered by a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor based on the MediaTek MT6589 SOC. There's 1 GB of RAM to help with multitasking. Other than that, you get 16 GB of internal storage, microSD card slot, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, 3G, and 2000 mAh battery.

Spice has recently launched Pinnacle FHD that packs in a 1080p (full-HD) screen for Rs 16,000. Sounds promising, but since we haven’t tested that phone yet, it hasn’t made it to our list.
