HTC Camera Appears On The Play Store; But It’s Not For Everyone

Like the HTC apps that appeared in the Google Play Store before it, the app will simply allow HTC to update its own core apps faster.

HTC has pushed its camera app on to the Google Play Store. Now before you conduct a quick search on the Play Store from your smartphone. You do have to keep in mind that the app will be available only if you own an HTC device. But as HTC puts it, not all devices will be eligible for the update, as the Sense experience will be limited to the mid and premium range only.

The latest update delivers the HTC Eye Experience that the company promised would come to its newer range of smartphones. Post the update however, users are reporting that they can still see the pink tinge in the images after updating their app.

The EYE Experience is supposed to bring in a host of new features, provided your device is capable of supporting them:

  • Face tracking: Track up to 4 faces during a video chat, and ensure that they stay within the camera’s angle of view.
  • Split capture: Record the action in front of you and yourself at the same time
  • Face Fusion: Using 2 photos such as your selfie and a photo of your favorite celebrity, try blending your look together
  • Voice Selfie: Take a picture or video selfie by just saying “cheese” or “action”
  • Live makeup: Smoothen your skin before taking your selfie
  • Photo Booth: Take 4 selfies and merge them into a single picture

The Taiwanese smartphone maker began pushing its system apps on to the Google Play Store, almost a year ago. It was a move that would help HTC update system apps quicker without the need to push the latest firmware updates to users. Meaning that HTC can update your camera experience even if you handset is not able to run the latest version of Android all thanks to the Sense UI integration.

The exercise is still kind of pointless in a way since the most of the HTC apps have their minimum requirements set to Android KitKat 4.4. But it still makes it a lot easier for HTC to push out just a camera update, than to roll out an entire firmware update, just to modify a few bits of the camera. The smartphone maker had rolled out a firmware update for its flagship smartphone, the HTC One (M8) recently that enabled all those features that were announced with the HTC Desire 820. So as of now we have no clue which HTC devices are technically eligible for the update or whether HTC will need you to upgrade your firmware first in order to receive future ones.
