Rumour: Sony Xperia Z To Get Android Stock ROM Support

Could hit the Play Store sometime in July, although availability outside the US is uncertain.

 

As we reported earlier, Samsung and HTC had announced the Nexus-like version of their top dogs. Android purists will soon get another reason to celebrate, as an insider has said Sony might announce a stock Android variant next month, called the Xperia Z Google Edition. By doing so, the company would gain immediate updates to the OS as soon as Google releases them, just like the Nexus series, and users won't have to wait for months to get the latest version for their smartphone.

This could get a lot more fun for consumers looking to make a choice on the basis of phone design, because now LG, Samsung, HTC and Sony would all run the same software (stock Android) and similar hardware internals (Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 SoC). Apart from the software, the remaining features of the Sony Xperia Z are said to remain unchanged. This means, you'll get a unique water and dirt resistant body, Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset with a 1.5 GHz quad-core processor, Adreno 320 GPU, and 2 GB of RAM. The handset will feature a 5" 1080p display, 13 megapixel main Exmor RS camera, and 2330 mAh battery.

Similar to the purist variants of the Samsung GALAXY S4 and HTC One, the Sony Xperia Z Google Edition will be sold via Google Play store. So there's a high chance that this phone will not be made available outside the US.
