Sony Launches Mid-Range Xperia C For Rs 20,500; A Bit Over-priced

The 5" Android handset is based on MediaTek chipset and will face stiff competition in that segment.

 

After unveiling the top-end Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1, Sony has rolled out its sub-20k smartphone Xperia C in India. This mid-range handset sports a 5" screen with pixel dimensions of 960x540. It features an 8 megapixel camera with Exmor R sensor and LED flash. Interestingly, the phone is powered by a quad-core MediaTek MT6589 chipset, which is mostly found in inexpensive domestic phones. These processors are more affordable compared to their Qualcomm or NVIDIA Tegra counterparts, and their performance is expectedly not in the same league either.

Similar to its 2012's flagship Xperia Z, this phone sports an LED notification light below the screen. It is also Sony's most expensive dual-SIM handset currently available in India. Coming to the subject of software, it offers Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean).

The Sony Xperia C is available in White, Black, and Purple. You can buy it for Rs 20,400 via online stores. For Rs 5000 less, you can pick up a XOLO Play T1000 that offers a better HD IPS screen and a more powerful Tegra 3 chipset. If you are brand concious, you can get it's Japanese cousin, the Panasonic P51, with similar processing hardware, but a higher resolution HD screen for a good 2K less. We won't be surprised to see Sony drop the price of the Xperia C by a couple of thousand rupees in a couple of weeks.
