YouTube Updates Its Desktop Web Player

YouTube has silently updated its desktop web player with a more sleeker look than ever before. The new player which is based on HTML 5 comes with a transparent control bar along with some updated buttons and drop-down menus.

It is also worth noting that the revamped player's new transparent control bar disappears giving it a much cleaner feel to watch videos.

However, it is worth noting that the new player was first spotted in Google Operating System blog back in April this year when it was being tested.

With this new look and feel, the new YouTube on the desktop now operates more like it does on mobile devices. However, it is worth noting the 'Watch Later' button has also been removed from the control bar.

The buttons on the new player are also larger, while the drop-downs for speed and quality also look to be more mobile-inspired.

This new update from YouTube makes sense especially when people are watching YouTube on their phones than ever before giving them a pleasant feel as they switch back and forth between devices.

Having said this, YouTube has recently claimed that it is now observing average session times of over 40 minutes on mobile which is up more than 50 percent over last year. Meanwhile, it is also being said that growth in “watch time” on YouTube is now up 60 percent year-over-year which is the fastest growth rate it has seen in two years.

However, this is not the first time YouTube has been updated due to the impact of mobile users. Recently, the company made a change to how it displays vertical videos which is a popular format now because of how users today hold their phones when they hit 'record'.
