Meizu’s MX5 Combines Flagship Specifications With Mid-Range Pricing

Comes with a host of improvements over the MX4.

The Meizu MX5 has finally gone official. What this means is there will no longer be any more rumours and that the MX5 has got to be better than the currently available MX4. If you ask us, the MX4 is pretty much in line with the MX4 Pro; thanks to the presence of a fingerprint reader.

Still then, there is a lot that has changed under the hood with Meizu’s newest flagship, apart from the price tag.

While Meizu fans in India have only been exposed to its budget offering the m1 Note, there is a lot more in store and we hope that the MX5 makes it to the country instead of the MX4.

Coming to the Meizu MX5 the handset looks very similar to the the MX4 Pro, but comes with some subtle differences, ones that make a big difference. These changes are not only internal, but alter the physical appearance of the smartphone to an extent.

This would include the use of the PPS (Polyphenylene Sulfide) material that, is actually plastic, but comes with a polished metal look and feel for the back.

The material covers just the top and the bottom edges of the back side and allow for better reception for the hidden antennas. This is why there are no ugly plastic inserts but just a smooth finished back with a finely engraved line (that is actually the edge of the metal body). This technology has a strong resemblance to a recent Apple patent.

The MX5’s camera is another area that has received a big upgrade. The unit comes with the same Sony IMX220 sensor, but comes with a new 6P blue film lens set up; one that is coupled with the new laser assisted autofocus system.

Another feature worth mentioning is mCharge. The new charging technology will allow the MX5 to charge from 0-25% in just ten minutes and goes up to 60% within 40 minutes.

As for the hardware specifications, they fall in line with the previous leaks:

  • We get a 5.5 inch Full HD AMOLED display (1920 x 1080 pixels) covered with Gorilla Glass 3
  • Inside there is a MediaTek Helio X10 (MT6795T SoC) with 3 GB of RAM
  • Memory options are limited to internal storage only but is available in 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB variants
  • The Camera department includes a 20.7 MP Sony sensor coupled a new laser-assisted autofocus system on the back and a f/2.0 aperture lens, 5 MP unit on the front
  • The handset comes with the regular connectivity options that includes dual SIM 4G, dual-band 802.11 ac/b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.1
  • All of the above is powered by a 3150 mAh battery

On the software side of things we have Android 5.0 Lollipop with Meizu’s custom Flyme 4.5 OS that has been optimised for the 64-bit true octa-core chipset.

The Meizu MX5 at launch will be available in deep grey, silver, and champagne gold colours in the following options and their respective price tags.

16 GB CNY 1800 (approx. Rs 18,450)
32 GB CNY 1999 (approx. Rs 20,490)
64 GB CNY 2399 (approx. Rs 24,590)
