Gmail To Get New New Look, Tabbed Theme

Tabbed theme would categorize and sort users' emails into five major categories.

Google, fresh out of its recently concluded I/O Developers Conference which led to the internet giant announcing revamps of its various products/services, could in some time give its premier email service, Gmail a completely different avatar. This new avatar is set to reach Gmail's Android and iOS mobile apps as well.

An Android Police report displays certain screenshots which are believed to be of the new look Gmail. The screenshot shows two important aspects of Gmail - Inbox and Priority Inbox, with "All Labels" being displayed as a separate entity. In the current design on the other hand, users would have to spend time finding and navigating to the "Labels". A new navigation drawer is also reportedly incorporated within the new look Gmail.

However, the most important part of the Gmail redesign is its Tabbed theme. According to The Next Web, Gmail would have tabs to aid users in better email categorization. This move, once implemented fully, would also lead to an intuitive Gmail experience.

In Gmail's expected tabbed theme, Next Web says that these tabs would be broadly categorized as Main, Offers, Forums, Notification and Social. Looking at this category, it seems obvious that the social tab would give users access to emails from the social world such as Facebook, Twitter and Google+. A sort by social category would happen to these emails which results in the filtering of all specific category emails. The other four categories, and most importantly "Main" is said to sort emails from users' family, friends and personal contacts. "Offers" tab would sort emails from e-commerce sites and all purchase related transaction emails of users. whereas notifications, according to The Next Web, would allow access to emails relating to bills, flight details/alerts. The last tabbed category "forums" would sort and display emails from various Forums that users are associated with.

These updates are indeed interesting as they can be expected to bring about a cleaner and more organized Gmail layout, along with allowing users quicker access to emails which they want to see. As of now, there is no information as to when Gmail would be updated, but the bigger worry is for those who like the current Gmail interface and the ability to use the older "Compose mail" screen, who may not necessarily want a change yet again.
