A Kardashian Is Measured In Seconds, Not Days

How many Kardashians is this bit of info worth?

A Kardashian Is Measured In Seconds, Not Days

Do you measure a Kardashian as “how long something lasts” or “how long it holds your attention”? There’s been a little confusion on the Net over the past couple of weeks about that.

Ethan Zuckerman, blogger and activist, came up with the very useful idea of the Kardashian as a unit – although its usefulness does depend a little on things like gender and orientation. As Zuckerman noted in My heart’s in Accra, “Conceptually, the Kardashian is the amount of global attention Kim Kardashian commands across all media over the space of a day.” In objective fashion, Zuckerman goes on to say he “think(s) of the Kardashian as a unit of perspective.”

The unit has, however, been misrepresented as “72 days of marriage,” which is the length of time the lady behind the name stayed married. Neither is that what was intended, nor it useful as a unit of perspective.

We’re clarifying because it’s easy to get confused: Google “kardashian unit” and you’ll get all the wrong info...

Incidentally, it also lets you crop pictures and add filters in a way similar to Instagram, the company that FB had recently purchased for $1 billion. Considering the growth potential that this simple-to-use app seems to have, we are now beginning to understand why such a huge amount was paid to abruptly purchase a startup with the popular photo app that was hardly a couple of years old...

Is Facebook Testing A New Timeline Interface?

As people are still trying to get used to Facebook's Timeline feature (some probably haven’t even opted for it yet), reports suggest that the social networking site is busy testing a newer layout. Leaked screenshots depict how the user's name and description is embedded with the cover photo, while details such as Friends, Photos, and Map are no longer placed as thumbnails, making the Timeline look cleaner. The About section has been changed to Summary, whereas Likes is now rebranded as Favorites.

While the changes are only cosmetic for now, nothing has been said about new apps and functionalities. Considering how post the IPO mess, FB is trying to save its face...

Claims to make searches faster and more visual; also available as plug-ins for popular desktop browsers.

Yahoo! Launches New Axis Web Browser For iPad And iPhone

Yahoo! has jumped into the web browser fray with its new Axis browser. Primarily launched as a full-fledged app for the iPhone and iPad, it is also available in the form of plug-ins for popular desktop browsers such as Chrome, IE, Firefox, and Safari. According to Ethan Batraski, head of product for the Search Innovation Group at the company, the goal of this new browser is to eliminate the middle step in the web search process. A normal web search process involves the user entering a query, view the results, and then go to the web page. Axis claims to take you directly to the web page. While that may sound similar to what the I'm Feeling Lucky button does in Google's desktop search, it is not so...

TechTree Impact: RCOM Begins Contacting Customers Harassed By Fake Arrest Calls

In an earlier news story, we had reported how Reliance Communications (RCOM) had denied any involvement or knowledge regarding calls made by recovery agents threatening customers with arrest for unpaid bills. The report seems to have struck a chord, with many readers chipping in with their personal accounts citing the same form of harassment. The encouraging reader response prompted us to create a survey meant to gauge the extent of this problem, so that operators could take remedial measures.

As a consequence of our reports, it appears that the company has now sitten up and taken notice of the issue. TechTree reader Sumeet Jain, whose case we had highlighted in our initial story, received a follow-up call a few days ago from an RCOM representative...

The website in question, Goodgov.in, is described as a new governance model as "suggested by Plan Panel: The commission will introduce a “flexi fund” concept in each of the flaghship programmes"...

Download: Hmmm (iOS)

Your social networking friends list usually consists of not just friends, but also casual acquaintances, office colleagues, and family members. While many things that you post may be generic in nature, you wouldn’t want your colleagues to know what you really did on your sick leave yesterday. Although you can create separate groups on your FB profile, you might accidently post it for all to see unless you change the post visibility settings as and when required. Moreover, since everything comes up on your profile together, you might take a while figure out which conversation you've had and with whom. That is where the Hmmm app can be of help...

Microsoft Launches So.cl, Its Social Offering, Without Much Fanfare

With social networking being one of the most happening online phenomena today, Microsoft has also tip-toed into the fray by quietly launching its social network called So.cl, which is pronounced as "Social". Before you jump the gun, we must state here that the software giant is promoting this new venture with students as its target audience, clearly mentioning this in its tag line as "A new research experience for students". It appears that MS is trying to take small steps, rather than take strides, and thus seems to be shying away from competing with the established players.

In fact, the FAQ page of the new social network states, "We expect students to continue using products such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and other existing social networks...

TechTree.tv: Seven Years Of YouTube

A look at how the video-sharing website has grown through the years.

It's been seven years since Google's video-sharing service, YouTube, first surfaced, although it was bought-out by the search giant only in 2006. Considering that anything in the limelight has a dedicated YouTube Channel, the service's popularity will only strengthen with time. At times, it also throws up some Frankenstein's Monsters (read Rebecca Black). For now though, here is a video that depicts its rise and growth through the last seven years that it has been around.

Indian Woman Divorces Husband For Failing To Change FB Status To "Married"

In what could be one of the first of such instances in our country, a woman from Aurangabad has filed for divorce because her husband did not change his Facebook relationship status from Single to Married. The social network provides options to set the relationship status as Single, Married, or Engaged. The 28-year old woman, who was married two months ago, has approached the family court seeking divorce stating that she cannot trust her husband anymore, as he has failed to announce their marriage on FB. Her husband, on his part, says that he forgot to update his status, because he was apparently so busy with family and business that he had no time to check his profile page or change the status. If Mark Zuckerberg could find time to change his status to Married, I find this a bit hard to believe...

TechTree Blog: What Did You Buy Online Today?

An interesting analysis reveals people's online shopping habits and preferences.

Did you know that there are well over 300 websites selling all kinds of things online? While you may have come across big names such as Flipkart.com, or eBay.in, there are lesser-known websites such as bangoes.com and Aaloo.in that offer some rather offbeat products. What is it that Indians prefer buying online? A survey conducted by MySmartPrice.com seems to indicate that more Indians shop for fashion accessories online than electronics and mobile phones. This should not come across as a surprise considering the ubiquity of daily deals in the Indian e-commerce market, and how fashion accessories have become hot property...

Anonymous Brings Down The Indian Congress Website To Protest Web Censorship

Tells Indians that it's time to "trash the government".

Anonymous Brings Down All India Congress Website

A few days ago, we informed you about some Indian ISPs banning ThePirateBay and Vimeo. Needless to say that this act didn't go down too well with the online community. Interestingly, the whole scene has grabbed international eyeballs, and Anonymous has returned the favour by hacking the websites of the Supreme Court of India and All India Congress.

Anonymous believes that websites are being blocked on government order, and therefore, they decided to take down the website of India's ruling party along with that of the Supreme Court...
