3G Makes Up One-Third Of Total Mobile Data Usage In India: Survey

A Nokia Siemens Networks study conducted between the December months of 2011 and 2012 throws up some surprising details.

Cellular 3G data services are expensive in the country, but the recent price cut has ensured that users warmed up to it. As Indians crib about dismal broadband penetration in the nation, the MBit Index study by Nokia Siemens Networks shows a 92% increase in mobile data traffic in both 2G and 3G services between December 2011 and December 2012.

In a press note, the survey report suggests 3G mobile data traffic usage sky-rocketed by 196%, while that on 2G services saw a 66% peak in the same period. The report further says that an average 3G user consumes as much as 300% more data at 434 MB a month as compared to a 2G user (115 MB per month). The growth has been attributed to a price drop in 3G service, as users happily migrated to faster speeds so much, that it makes up for one-third of the total mobile data consumption in the country. Hopefully this is a cue for operators planning on offering 4G services in India — price it sensibly, and you'll surely find takers.
