Motorola Updates Camera And Gallery Apps; Adds Material Design

While the update clearly looks good, we recommend that you hold on to your current camera app.

Motorola has updated two of its apps that are available on the Play Store for Motorola smartphone owners. The company only recently announced that its Android 5.0 Lollipop firmware updates have begun rolling out (not in India yet), and seems like Moto will be delivering a complete Material Design experience by updating the rest of its apps as well.

While we had a go at the updated Camera app, everything indeed seemed to look spruced up and refreshed. There is even the addition of the new timer mode and you can flick your wrist (Moto X, Droid Ultra, and Droid Turbo only) to launch the Camera app. What we are not happy with, is the performance. There is barely any improvement in terms of quality and while Motorola managed to squeeze in a bit more, the focusing bit is still slow and shooting speeds seriously need improvements. While users have reported about a video bug as well, we did not notice any stability issues with the same.

As for the updated Gallery app, it still falls short on functionality (like always) but makes up for it with a refreshed design and speedy performance. Still then, we could not help but point out that both app icons have not changed post this update; since Motorola’s device range will soon get updated to Lollipop here in India. Motorola had recently updated its Camera app just a month ago to deliver Android Wear support with the remote shutter feature.
