Facebook Turns Paper Into A Mini Social Network With Its Latest Update

Update 1.2 brings trends, hashtags and complicates what should have been an easy and uncomplicated news reading experience.

 

Facebook’s has released a pretty big update for its news aggregator app called Paper and it brings a lot more to the app in the form of photo tags, hashtags and trends as well.

The app was an instant hit after launch and was clearly optimised just for iOS bringing a smooth and user-friendly UI and complete Facebook integration as well. Apparently, its users wanted to see hashtags and trends in their interface in order to help them jump to the stuff that is current, rather than catching up on what someone had posted a day ago.

Facebook listened to it and has delivered. Paper now comes with trending section which delivers a real-time view of topics that people are talking about on the app itself. Also included are hashtags so that people can tap into a hashtag and check out related posts.

Also included are additional features for the Facebook side of the app which include Photo tags, the ability to edit your profile picture and cover photos straight from the app.  Since we are talking pictures, you can even zoom into and tilt your phone to explore all the tags in your photographs.

Paper will now allow you to even choose the people whom you share your news with apart from sharing publicly or with your friends. Also included are performance improvements to make the app smoother and load photos faster.

Facebook seems to have built a news sharing network with Paper. The only problem is that it only includes the iOS crowd for now meaning that sharing particular news with your Android friends will happen only via Facebook and not Paper. Moreover Paper was supposed to be a news aggregator, meaning that you could read the news while keeping track of what happens on Facebook and share the same if need be. Unfortunately Facebook seems to be mining all it can from the app by complicating things which may see a few users switching to a simpler Flipboard experience instead.
