BlackBerry Launches The Budget Z3 In Indonesia; Will It Ever Reach Indian Shores?

The handset could bring in much-needed profits for the ailing company if it sees a global launch.

BlackBerry finally launched Z3 in Indonesia, a budget handset that said to bring the BlackBerry experience to the masses. The handset has been launched in Indonesia for IDR 2,199,000 which is approximately Rs 11,434 in Indian money.

The struggling smartphone maker has been seeing repeated sales slumps with its recent handsets ever since the launch of iOS and Android powered devices and has launched the BlackBerry Z3 in hopes that the affordable handset may bring in much-needed profits to sustain the company.

The device is the first one to be produced by the BlackBerry’s recently appointed contract manufacturing giant, Foxconn Technology which is known for producing handsets for Apple. The BlackBerry Z3 comes with some really budget specifications that almost puts it shoulder to shoulder with the recently launched Moto E. The device comes with a 5 inch qHD (540 x 960 pixel) display and sports a 1.2 GHz Snapdragon 200 processor with 1.5 GB of RAM. A 5 MP shooter is in charge of the camera department with a 1.1 MP sensor on the front. Powering all of the above is a large 2,500 mAh battery unit which should easily last a day on moderate use.

“If this device allows them to grow again, even if it’s just small, steady growth, that’s a success in itself. That says there is still room for BlackBerry in Indonesia,” said Ryan Lai, market analyst at consultancy IDC.

The struggling smartphone maker has been putting out price-cut after price cut for its existing smartphones in India which have failed to drive sales since launch. This is all thanks to the unstoppable growth of Android and iOS devices that currently dominate the smartphone space; one that belonged to BlackBerry a long time ago. If the smartphone indeed becomes a success for BlackBerry, expect the Z3 to see a global launch soon.
