Book Local Train Tickets In Mumbai From Android Devices Soon

Given the reputation of Railways, the project may take a decade for completion.

While booking tickets via SMS has been floated in the recent past, it's now time for the Railways to let local commuters in Mumbai turn to their Android handsets instead. If reports are to be believed, then this will soon be a reality. The Centre for Railway Information System (CRIS) is said to be working on a service that lets users from a nearby railway station send out the code of their destination station. A "message" will be sent after the required amount has been deducted via Internet banking. The major glitch that the Central Railway (CR) seems to be facing is locking down these SMSes, so that they "cannot be copied or forwarded to the next contact".

Why only Android, you ask?  Well, the railways estimates that around 40 per cent commuters use Android-based handsets. It’s a long way ahead, apart from railway station codes, geo-tagging the phone location, verification and online banking permits, all of it will take time and loads of effort. Gauging the user experience on the IRCTC site, it may take even longer than we expect.
