Google Celebrates Julius Richard Petri's Birthday With Bacteria

Google's interactive doodles enjoy a large fan following. These doodles at times also are a reason for dip in productivity. But this time it just might be a bit different. Google celebrates the 161st birthday of Julius Richard Petri, who invented the petri dish, with petri dishes full of bacteria!

Hit the play button appearing in the second O of the Google logo, and the Google-hues petri dishes are swabbed with bacteria that form letters of the brand. Move your mouse over each of the dish to figure out the origins of the bacteria. These come from used socks, door knobs, computer keyboards, dogs, plants, and a wet dish scrub.

Julius Richard Petri is a German bacteriologist who came up with the idea of a petri dish when assisting Robert Koch, who is considered as the founder of modern bacteriology.
