MTS India To Shut Shop In 10 Circles, Following Supreme Court Orders

Services will remain active for 30 days; data dongles business to remain unaffected.

 

MTS seems to be the latest casualty after Uninor as far as voice-calling services are concerned. The Supreme Court had ordered telcos with cancelled licences, along with those that weren’t a part of the November 2012 spectrum auction, to shut shop.

Latest to take a hit is Sistema Shyam Teleservices (SSTL) which announced an exit from 10 circles including Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, North East, Orissa, and Punjab. Times Of India reports that the move will affect around 22 lakh customers, but unlike 18 lakh customers of Uninor, these subscribers have 30 days to "exhaust their balance and to port out to a telecom operator of their choice".

This move however doesn't impact MTS' other businesses, which includes data dongles for internet connectivity on the move. With reports of the TRAI testing MNP between roaming cycles, many people will be eager for the service to become available.
