Uninor Discontinues Services In Mumbai Circle With Immediate Effect

SC orders telcos that didn't bag spectrum in the previous auctions to withdraw services. No MNP possible, 18 lakh subscribers have lost connectivity.

That Uninor was a popular service provider is a debatable point. But its decision to pull the plug on services in Mumbai will surely affect a lot of users in the circle, because the decision was put in immediate effect. An official statement on Uninor's website states that owing to a Supreme Court order, it is one of the operators that didn't bag spectrum in the previous auctions and hence has to withdraw its services immediately.

Moreover, since the telco hasn't been offered any temporary licenses, it cannot offer number portability option to its customers either. So, as per sources reported by the Times of India, 18 lakh subscribers have no connectivity after midnight on 16th February, 2013.

That being said, subscribers in the other six Uninor circles of including Maharashtra and Goa, Gujarat, UP East, UP West, Bihar and Jharkhand, and Andhra Pradesh will remain unaffected as the company has managed to secure spectrum rights for as long as 20 years. The brand also assured that users from these circles can continue using services in Mumbai thanks to roaming agreements.

The only silver lining in this rather bleak news comes for Uninor employees in Mumbai. The company has promised help them secure "new employment opportunities", in either the other operating circles or with its competitors in Mumbai.

But for its loyal customer base in Mumbai, it's probably time to move to other service providers. Hope the other telcos can all cope with the sudden crowd though.
