Microsoft Office 2013 Launches Today

The physical copy will come in different editions and have more cloud integration. Office 365 subscribers get the update at the same annual pricing.

Microsoft is all set to launch its latest Office suite tonight (today by US time zone) according to the Microsoft Office Twitter account. It had been rumoured since quite some time that the launch was around the corner. The tweet also mentions that the unveiling will happen at New York's Bryant Park. Additionally, there is also a new landing page on the Office 365 website that mentions "More time to do the things you want", along with the hash tag #timeto365.

The software went RTM on 11th October of last year and has since been available to MSDN and TechNet subscribers, in its Professional Plus edition. In standard Microsoft tradition, "General Availability" makes it finally available for consumers, almost four months later.

Microsoft Office 2013 is known to be more cloud-based, as even the default save location for a document is SkyDrive for a user logged in to one's account. It will be available in boxed retail editions as Home & Student, Home & Business, Professional, and Professional Plus. Pricing for various boxed editions will range from $140 (Rs 7600) for Home & Student to $400 (Rs 21,600) for Professional. Qualifying users of Office 2010 can get a free upgrade.

Office 365 subscribers get the update as well, in Home Premium, Small Business Premium, ProPlus, and Enterprise editions. Office 365 works on the "software as a service" model that allows subscribers to use the various components of the Office suite by paying a yearly subscription.

A special version with restricted feature set, known as Office 2013 Home & Student RT, is shipped free of cost with Windows RT devices.
