Sony Recalls Xperia Tablet S Due To Manufacturing Defect

Ironically, the "splash-proof" Android 4.0 (ICS) tablet can't handle liquids because of gap in casing.

Sony's Xperia Tablet S, launched at IFA 2012, was being snapped up in the US, Japan, Western Europe. Unfortunately for the company, after shipping around 100,000 units, a serious manufacturing defect has been discovered. Reportedly, the Tablet S, marketed as a water-resistant gadget, is actually prone to damage from liquids due to a gap between the slate's screen and rear casing. The Japanese manufacturer has acknowledged the problem and issued an apology, pulling the gadget from shops and online stores — its US website now displays Coming Soon instead of In Stock. For those who have already bought the tablet, it will begin a free "inspection" and replacement programme by the end of this month, once defect-free parts become available. Until then, users are advised to keep their tablets away from water.

A spokeswoman for the company told Reuters that the problem stemmed from a manufacturing flaw at the Chinese plant where the slate was fabricated. She further added that Sony hasn't yet decided when it will resume sales. This incident certainly counts as a big blow to the struggling electronics giant, especially since it had finally begun to make an impact in the tablet scene. With the next wave of slick and powerful Windows 8 devices around the corner, the competition will only get tougher for Android-based slates. On the bright side, the gadget hasn't been launched in India yet, so this issue will certainly be fixed by the time the product reaches our shores.
