Meet Android Nougat! The Next Version of Android

This is the first time Google got users to choose a name for its Operating System

It is a sad day for Team Techtree! Our suggestion for a name for the latest Android version (We wanted it to be known as Android Neyyappam) didn’t make it to Google’s lexicon. Instead, the company went ahead and officially pronounced the name Android Nougat.

In fact, it is not just ‘Neyyappam’ that has gone out of the window. Even Nankhatai wasn’t preferred. Can we say that Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google Inc., has obviously not tasted either of these two sweet dishes?

On a more serious note, Google announced on Snapchat last night that the new Android version (initially called Android-N) would be called Android Nougat. The company, which had opened up the Android naming process to the public for the first time, clarified that it wasn’t committed to names suggested by users.

Lest, the new operating system could end up with a name as corny as “Nutty McNutface,” the company said in the post.

Along with the Indian names that went down the chute, there were other crazier ones like Nutter Butter, Nutella (obviously a existing brand), Nerds and even Necco Wafers.

As for the latest in the dessert-themed Android version, the release could still take some time. Initially announced in March and currently on a beta test, the new version brings features such as an improved notification shade and split-screen multi-tasking on the mobile operating system.

It is also said to contain the Google’s new VR platform, called Daydream. Of course, the operating system would only support handsets that carry the requisite hardware that supports Daydream.

On a lighter note, Lauren Goode, an editor with TheVerge.com got a congratulatory note from the publication (See it Here) for a picture that she shared via her Twitter account. It sought votes for Nougat, the name of her pet cat, which posed with an Android wearable device.
