Tesla's All-Electric Car For The Masses Will Be Called The Model III

The Model III will rival the BMW 3 Series and have a range of 200 miles (approx 320km)

American all-electric car manufacturer Tesla hasn't yet outed its gull-wing-doored Model X, but CEO Elon Musk has confirmed the third model to roll off its production lines will be targeted at the masses. In an interview with Auto Express magazine he revealed that the company was working on a BMW 3 Series rival that will simply be called the 'Model III'.

Musk also confirmed that the company was indeed thinking of calling its most affordable car the 'Model E' as rumours had suggested. However Ford Motor Company had plans to launch a vehicle with a similar name, leading the guys at Tesla to rethink the name.

“We were going to call it model E for a while and then Ford sued us saying it wanted to use the Model E – I thought this is crazy, Ford’s trying to kill sex! So we’ll have to think of another name,” said Musk in the AE report.

It has been known for sometime now that Tesla is targeting 2017 as the window within which it will launch a car costing $35,000. The Model III will be the vehicle to do so, and it's launch date could coincide with the setting up of the company's Gigafactory – the world's largest lithium-ion production plant.

The Model III will have a range of 200 miles per charge, while the original Model S roadster will get a series of boost upgrades that will increase its range to 400 miles. As Musk put it the upgrades "will allow you to drive from LA to San Francisco non-stop."

While the current car is reserved for those with deep pockets, it's pretty clear that the technology is getting cheaper and Elon Musk wants to give it to everyone.
