Cortana Update Will Now Allow It To Predict World Cup Wins

The smart voice assistant that is yet to step out of beta is already taking big strides in the football field thanks to Bing Search.

Cortana has already proved to the world that she is indeed smarter than Siri. While the voice assistant is yet to step out of beta, the team behind Cortana decided to add a slight touch of Bing’s Prediction engine to the mix and deliver World Cup predictions for the important matches. Marcus Ash, Group Program Manager for Cortana on Windows Phone tweeted about the same, letting the world know that Cortana is ready for World Cup predictions.

“A few weeks ago, Bing announced they were taking the experiment even further by offering predictions for outcomes of sporting events like the very high-profile soccer matches happening right now in Brazil. Because Cortana in Windows Phone 8.1 is powered by Bing, we thought it would be fun to have Cortana verbalize what team she thinks might win based on this prediction technology from Bing. For example – if you ask Cortana “Who will win Team A or Team B?” she will provide a response on who she thinks might win the game”

said Brandon LeBlanc, Senior Marketing Communications Manager on the Marketing Group at Microsoft.

The answers may be witty but Bing’s prediction engine powers it all with Cortana simply adding the voice to it. The engine which was earlier used to predict which contestants are likely to be eliminated from voting shows like The Voice, American Idol and Dancing With The Stars did so with great accuracy. The engine basically works by defining popularity as the frequency and sentiment of searches, which are then combined with social signals and keywords to deliver predictions. Quite a number of complex calculations we might say.
