Microsoft Will Begin Rolling Out Windows Phone 8.1 Starting From The 24th Of June

Hopefully we should see the Lumia 930 getting announced before that.

Windows Phone 8.1 was announced back at Microsoft’s Build Conference in April after repeated leaks which resulted from the developers SDK. After the announcement, those of you who simply could not wait immediately moved to the developers preview. With most Windows Phone users already using the latest and greatest software from Microsoft, it comes as no big news that Microsoft will officially begin rolling out the ‘final version’ of the mobile OS starting from the 24th of June. This news comes from Microsoft’s product support site which clearly shows Windows Phone 8.1’s lifecycle start date as the 24th of June, 2014.

Why should you know about this? Well developer previews are ideally built just for developers so that they can simply go about enhancing or optimising their apps for the new version of the upcoming software. These are usually unstable and will have plenty of bugs. Moreover, the developer preview is has not been built keeping the special hardware in mind. So if you happen to own a Nokia Lumia 1020, you will not be able to get the best out of its camera until Nokia optimises or tweaks the software a bit.

This will happen once Microsoft rolls out the final version of Windows Phone 8.1. Meaning that Nokia and other manufacturers will be able to take the final code and tweak it to their liking as per their device hardware.

What happens next is that Nokia soon releases its ‘Cyan update’ which will utilise the hardware perfectly helping you make complete use of your 41 megapixel camera (raw images, glance screen etc.).

What may happen before, is that Nokia may launch the Lumia 930; its current flagship here in India. Releasing the device after the software roll-out will not give it exclusivity; meaning that after the roll-out every other device will be running Windows Phone 8.1.

Since Microsoft and Nokia are now one thanks to the recent merger, expect the ‘Lumia Cyan’ update to hit your Nokia Lumia devices soon. For those of you who own HTC or Samsung devices, there will indeed be a longer wait period.
