LG To Begin Manufacturing Its Mid-Segment Odin SoC Soon

Being a mid-range one, it will definitely not make it to the upcoming LG G3.

 

Last year around this time, LG had hit a rough patch, consumers had lost faith in the brand and the company was just not able to sell any handsets. Then LG finally hit the sweet spot with the LG G2 which was soon followed by the LG Nexus 5 from which LG clearly made some big profits. With rumours floating about the LG G3, there is also news about the long-awaited Odin SoC.

Reports point out that LG’s Odin SoC is indeed all set to enter mass production. The chipset appeared on benchmarks last year delivering some mid-range performance which was definitely not competition for the current ‘king of the ring’, the Snapdragon 801 (8947 AC). The mid-range tag comes from the fact that the Odin SoC uses ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture with four Cortex-A15 cores and four Cortex-A7 cores. The low-powered A7s will be used for less intensive processes. The SoC will be built using a 28nm manufacturing process.

As we can see from the processor’s specifications, it is not something that can be used for flagship devices. It seems to be designed for the battery conscious mid-range mobile devices. This leaves out the LG G3 as it is definitely going to be LG’s next flagship. Still then it is a pretty capable set up.

The processor will be built by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). If the name sounds familiar, you are correct as this is the same manufacturer who will be building Apple’s A8 processor for the upcoming iPhone 6.
