Leaked: Samsung GALAXY Gear Photos and Specs

Rumoured to sport 2.5-inch OLED screen, 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, & 1 GB RAM.

Brace yourselves, it will be raining smartwatches in the near future. Samsung is all set to unveil its answer to the upcoming Apple iWatch and smartwatches from Pebble, Sony, and Microsoft on September 4 at IFA 2013 in Berlin. However, AmongTech and VentureBeat seem to have stolen the Korean electronics major's thunder by leaking what appears to be credible promotional images and specifications of the Galaxy Gear smartwatch.

VentureBeat's managed to source what's possibly the first real photo of the smart accessory. The photo, if authentic, points to a rather blocky design. The watch face is marked by a conspicuous lack of curved glass as it's unreleased peers from Microsoft and Apple. According to AmongTech, the smartwatch will not sport a FOLED (flexible OLED) display either. Having said that, Samsung is known to deliberately ship prototypes that don't mirror the final product.

At any rate, the specs uncovered so far point to a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor and 1 GB of RAM, which is quite phenomenal in something like a smartwatch. This isn't surprising, because if there's one thing Samsung loves doing best is throw many gigahertz at optimisation issues. Nevertheless, that sort of horsepower and RAM is necessary for Jelly Bean, which is what the watch will ship preloaded with. The watch is rumoured to be available in 6 and 8 GB variants.

With what appears to be a 4 MP camera capable of recording 720p video, combined with goodies such as accelerometer and a 2.5-inch touchscreen, this smartwatch could open a range of possibilities with wearable computing applications. However, don't let that thought keep you from taking a gander at the rest of the leaked specifications:

  • 2.5 inch OLED touchscreen display 320×320 resolution
  • 10 hours of battery life
  • Dual core processor 1.5GHz
  • 4 MegaPixel front camera 720p
  • Speakers in the device’s strap
  • Accelerometer
  • Bluetooth 4.0 LE
  • Android Jelly Bean
  • 1 GB of RAM
