Yahoo! Let's You Pick A Short Email ID

Culling of inactive accounts is now complete, user names will be made available to users again.

After culling inactive email IDs, those who are still want personalised Yahoo! ID's can now make their request count. The company has opened up requests to "get the Yahoo! username you've always wanted". You can give as many as five alternatives, (which you can list out here) and whichever is available (going by the order of preference) will be yours. The service will be available until 7th August, and by mid-August the internet giant will sent out email invitations. You need to claim the ID within 48 hours of the email being sent after which it will be given to someone else.

There have been security concerns, which as the reports suggests, Yahoo! has taken all of it into consideration before reassigning user IDs. These concerns include accounts associated with e-commerce sites and other password-protected services such as Facebook and Twitter.

For now, Yahoo! says emails from these defunct accounts are bouncing back, and the company has a system on place to help other websites keep a track of switch in email once the entire allocation process is complete.
