Sony Unveils Its Humongous Xperia Ultra Z Smartphone

The 6.4" water and dust proof Android handset will connect to the Sony Smartwatch 2.

As expected, Sony unveiled its Smartwatch 2 at the Mobile Asia Expo, Shanghai. Along with the waterproof smartwatch, it also broke cover on its gigantic Xperia Ultra Z. Competing with the Samsung Mega, this new monstrous phablet packs in a 6.4" full HD screen with something called as a "TRILUMINOS Display for mobile powered by X-Reality" (marketing mumbo-jumbo for crisp pictures on a huge screen). It sports a tempered glass back panel to give it a premium finish, and like it smaller sibling, this one will also sport a scratch-resistant screen, and follow the company's OmniBalance design language.

The handset is IP55 and IP58 compliant making it dust and water proof as well. Powered by a 2.2 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor with Adreno 330 GPU, the Japanese manufacturer has not specified the RAM that keeps this beast up and running, but we are guessing that it's 2 GB. The 4G LTE compliant handset comes with an 8 MP camera with an Exmor RS sensor, and a 3000 mAh battery.

Here are its specs as per the official product page:

  • 6.44" with TRILUMINOS display, protected by Super Hard Coat ASF glass; pixel dimensions of 1080x1920.
  • Google Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean); Google Play support.
  • 16 GB internal storage (up to 11 GB user-accessible).
  • microSD card support for up to 64 GB (SDXC supported)
  • 2.2 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor.
  • Adreno 330 GPU.
  • 8 megapixel camera with Exmor RS sensor.
  • 3D games, Radio (FM radio with RDS), 3.5 mm audio jack, aGPS, Bluetooth 4.0, DLNA Certified, NFC, Wi-Fi Hotspot.
  • 179.4 x 92.2 x 6.5 mm; 212 grams.
  • Available Colours: Black, White, Purple.
  • 3000 mAh battery.

Apart from stylus support, the handset will also sync with the recently-announced Sony Smartwatch 2. The Xperia Z Ultra is set for a global launch in Q3 2013, but exact pricing and availability details haven't been specified yet.
