Previously on June 24Smartwatches are the "in-thing", representing the next generation of wearable computing technology. With various companies said to be engrossed in giving their respective smartwatches the finishing touches in a bid to outsmart rival brands, the new wearable computing technology battle can only intensify. As if to announce that the a second "Smartwatch battle" has begun, Sony looks all set to launch a next-gen Smartwatch at the Mobile Asia Expo 2013 that is set to begin from 26th June, in Shanghai, China.

A report in Cnet states that Sony's smartwatch would in all probability come with a bigger screen, and the next-generation Sony Smartwatch is also said to have a certain degree of water-resistance, allowing people to swim with smartwatches on their wrists. However, the most important aspect of Sony's new generation wearable technology is its NFC (Near Field Communication) support.

Since NFC means easy syncing with smartphones, we can expect sync with recent Sony Xperia smartphone models, with the help of Bluetooth technology. Sony's current-generation Smartwatch also syncs with Android smartphones over Bluetooth, and operates at a maximum range of 10 meters. However, since the USP of NFC is its ability to establish a "contactless payments" system, how about Sony's next-gen smartwatches being used as a substitute for credit cards? This is one concept that could serve as a potential differentiator over rival brands.

These new smartwatches from Sony are also expected to run on the latest Android platform; so racing against the clock to recharge it is unfortunately here to stay. Sony's current-gen smartwatch is available for purchase at a price of Rs 6,200 across various India e-commerce portals. The price tag of the company's next-gen smartwatch is not revealed yet.
