Google now provides its Person Finder Tool to help people track the status of their loved ones stuck at Uttarakhand that has been ravaged by floods since the last couple of days. Nature's fury has even led to holy shrines being submerged under water. Outsite of Government operations that are in full fray, people can use Google's Person Finder application to get vital information about the people they care for, as data about the various pilgrims stuck in the floods has been made public. All users have to do is key in part/full name of their loved ones, and obtain vital information about them, in a very short span of time.

The Google Finder Page consists of two sections, "I'm Looking for someone" and "I have information about someone". Clicking the first section redirects users to a search box, where they can key in the name of people stuck at flood ravaged Uttarakhand; and the search will display all matching records for public viewing.

Along with tracking information, Google's Person Finder also enables users (including NGO's and media) to upload to its database, information related to a particular pilgrim and his/her family members, with the "I have information about someone" section, so that these details are made public, and subsequently display when they are being searched by family members/friends.

Google's Person Finder is currently tracking about 1400 records (with more uploads possible in future). The application is available in both English and Hindi languages and can be accessed via mobile devices as well.

The Person Finder is an initiative by Google's Crisis Response Team, and had earlier operated during the Japan earthquake in 2011. Along with the Person Finder, Google Crisis response Team, in a blog post have listed various contact numbers of control rooms across Uttarakhand, which people can make use of to find vital info with respect to pilgrims stranded in Uttarakhand, and to report emergency.
