Google Drive, Gmail Now Share 15 GB Free Storage

If your 10 GB of Gmail space was running out fast, the free storage upgrade will cheer you.

Now you can store even more on your Google Drive as the search giant has finally rolled out its upgraded capacity. Google had announced just before its I/O conference last month that it will increase the free online storage space for Google Drive and other services to 15 GB from the current 10 GB, promising the rollout over the next couple of weeks from then. The said storage space is shared over Gmail, Google+ Photos, and Drive. Additionally, business (paid) users get an equivalent 5 GB upgrade from the previous 25 GB to 30 GB. Google also offers 100 GB for a monthly charge of $4.99 (approx Rs 290) and $9.99 (Rs 580) for 200 GB.

Last month, Zoolz had also announced free 100 GB of cloud storage for its first million users. While 15 GB of Google storage pales in comparison, it has the technological edge of having drag-and-drop support that Zoolz lacks. Also, you can directly download files to Google Drive off the web without having to download it to your computer first and then upload. However, the Google storage is shared across three of its services and is therefore more likely to get exhausted. At the end of the day, even the lower 15 GB of Google's storage should be enough for users if used only for basic backup, while Zoolz is more useful when it comes to really backing up your computer.

Online storage has suddenly been more in the limelight over the past couple of months. The reason is simply the convenience it offers over local storage because files stored online can be accessed from anywhere as long as you have internet access. With a lot of people using mobile phones usually with scant internal storage space, the cloud storage medium suddenly becomes more relevant. Of course, for a country like India, it will also depend on the cost, speed, and availability of mobile internet that will decide whether or not this increased storage space will actually make any sense.

Aside from Google Drive, we sense a strong sense of cheer among users who barely use cloud storage for files, but do use a lot of email. In one fell swoop, this step adds 50 percent more available storage for emails. Until now, if you'd crossed 90% of storage on Gmail's free 10 GB plan, you'd have had to consider buying additional space which works out to a high recurring cost for an individual user. This free upgrade has not been all bed-of-roses though, with numerous Gmail service outages (error 502), possibly related to engineering the space-sharing merger between the services.
