West Bengal CID Website Hacked By Pak Outfit

Defaced website carried message about alleged police brutality in J&K.

Just days after five Indian government websites were hacked by hackers from Pakistan, another hacker group from that country, Muslim Liberation Army (MLA), has hacked into the home page of CID of West Bengal. The group defaced the website late on Saturday, 29 October, and put up its message, "This institutionalized impunity with which the killings of civilians by military and police forces in Jammu & Kashmir continues should be a source of shame for India which propagates to be a democracy!"

The message from MLA also alleged, "Everyday, hundreds of innocent people are abused, raped and even killed in Kashmir by the Indian army. A third of the deaths are children," and warned, "We shall not give up, giving up is not an option". It also posted two photos, one in which an Indian soldier is scaring away Kashmiri children, and the other in which a child is hurling stones at an Indian tank. The hack was soon discovered and the site taken down for reconstruction. While it was restored on Sunday night, the CID has not provided any information about the number of pages damaged or compromised by this hacking incident.

The Central government has asked the Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) to conduct an immediate analysis on all government sites to bolster the security. Meanwhile, officers from CID and cyber experts are yet to track the server log to find out information about how the site was hacked into. Indian websites have been a prime target from our neighbours since quite some time now. The CBI, cyber cell website of Mumbai police, and even the site of National Investigating Agency have been attacked. 117 government websites have been targeted in the past three years till June this year. While most of the outfits claim to be from Pakistan, it is been thought that China has been playing a crucial role in these attacks.
