Incoming: Nokia Branded Smartphones In 2017

The Finnish company will be returning to the smartphone space next year.

Nokia, once dominated the phone market. However, post iPhone, it couldn't keep up with the competition, and finally gave up on the handset division. Under its new CEO, Rajeev Suri's leadership, the Finnish company decided to focus on its network infrastructure business instead. Despite being out of action in the phone business for over a year, Nokia's brand image remains strong among the consumers world over. Taking a hint from that, the company is making a comeback in the smartphone space next year.

The confirmation comes from company's presentation slide made for the investor-focused event. In its upcoming strategy, the company states that Nokia's brand will return to smartphones in 2017. What fans need to understand though is that these handsets won't be manufactured by the Finnish company. Much like Polaroid, the company will only lend its name to Chinese device manufacturers. In Nokia's case, Finnish company HMD will oversee the device manufacturing process. Nokia will provide its wide range of patents while Foxconn will bring its R&D and manufacturing expertise to the table. For those not in the know, Foxconn also handles manufacturing requirement for other biggies such as Apple, Dell, and HP.

Nokia's comeback handset will most likely run Android. It will be interesting how much of past glory Nokia can regain in the smartphone segment currently dominated by the Korean tech-giant Samsung.
