Team Anna Plans To Rally People Against Corruption Via SMSs

Launches Service to update subscribers about IAC's activities.

Team Anna has launched an SMS card service across India, in a bid to inform people about their campaign against corruption. Priced at Rs 25 each, one crore cards are now in circulation in the first phase, and it has been well received in Uttar Pradesh. The cards are currently being sent to Delhi and Chennai and from there they would be shipped to the other parts of the country. Each card costs Rs 20, with Rs 5 charged against VPP or courier, and subscribers will received about 3-4 messages per week through the year, in Hindi and English.

Each of these scratch cards features a specific number, and is said to be issued considering the "sometimes positive, negative and neutral" coverage that is meted out to the team by the media. With this move, India Against Corruption (IAC) activists believe that their supporters will be better informed. The card can be activated by sending an SMS with the serial number to 9223334545.

Using this card, the subscriber will be kept updated about the IAC's activities for one year. Vaibhav Maheshwari, an active member of Team Anna in Uttar Pradesh told IANS, "Faced with fund crunch, IAC has decided to rake up the money from the supporters". Considering that their database hold over three crore mobile numbers, bulk SMSing would cost the IAC around Rs 5 lakh given the current SMS market rates. For now though, IAC has purchased bulk SMS service from a Mumbai-based server.
