There’s Nothing “Active” About Chevrolet’s Active Phone Cooling

But it is a smart idea nonetheless.

American automotive manufacturer, Chevrolet has taken in-car cooling to new levels. The company has announced that it will now fit certain models in the US (and hopefully in India) with its all new Active Phone Cooling system.

No, this is not the glovebox cooler that we already have in most automobiles in India, its a cooler for cars like the 2016 Impala and Malibu, Volt and the Cruze line (and others) that already come equipped with a wireless charging compartment.

The problem that the new technology solves, its that its allows the cooled HVAC air in the area where the smartphones are placed, keeping them cool while charging.

Chevrolet came up with the idea after it discovered during testing that smartphones in the compartment would often heat while charging. At times, smartphones would get so hot that they would shut down altogether. Also, this is bad for the smartphone as it would shorten the life of the components in it.

Strangely, the cooling system will work only when the driver turns on the HVAC for the vehicle; meaning that your phone will still heat up if your driving, and haven't turned the air-conditioning on.
