ISRO To Launch India's First Radar Imaging Satellite

Plans to send RISAT-1 into orbit on 20th April.

 

UPDATE (03-Apr-2012): Sources have told us that the 20th April launch has been postponed. Fresh launch dates are yet to be announced. We will keep you updated about the same.

It seems like 20th April is a very lucky day for the Indian Satellite and Research Organisation (ISRO), considering that the RISAT-2 and the RESOURCESAT-2 were launched successfully into orbit on the same day in 2009 and 2011 respectively. While the former is a Radar Imaging Satellite, capable of taking images of the earth during day and night in cloudy conditions, the latter is an advanced remote sensing satellite.This year, it plans to launch India's first indigenously designed and developed all-weather satellite that can capture day and night images, from the Sriharikota spaceport.

The RISAT-2 was purchased from Israel, while the RISAT-1 with the same capabilities is the first of its kind to be completely developed in India.

Weighing about 1850 kgs, the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C19 (XL)) is expected to launch it into orbit. RISAT-2 had been launched with military objectives that included primarily the task of monitoring India's borders. RISAT-1 on the other hand, has civilian objectives that includes keeping a check on agriculture and water resources management, among other tasks.
