Xiaomi Open To Talks With Ericsson

The move comes after the Delhi HC's order to ban import and sales of Xiaomi smartphone in India

 

Xiaomi has announced that it will comply with the Delhi High Court's order to ban the import and sale of its smartphones in India, following a patent infringement case filed by Ericsson. The move comes as a huge blow to the Chinese company, at a time when India is on route to becoming its second largest global market.

“We have been forced to suspend sales in India until further notice due to an order passed by the Delhi High Court. As a law abiding company, we are investigating the matter carefully and assessing our legal options,” said Hugo Barra, Vice President of Xiaomi, in a post on popular social network Facebook.

According to a report in TechCrunch, Ericsson was forced to take legal action against Xiaomi as the latter refused to respond to queries about intellectual property for three years. Following the ban, Xiaomi says it is willing to have talks with Ericsson, citing how important a market India is for it.

Ericsson claims that Xiaomi has infringed upon its IP rights with regard to GSM, EDGE, and UMTS/WCDMA standards. The company previously pulled up manufacturers such as Micromax, Gionee and Intex for similar reasons, but unlike Xiaomi all the three companies complied with Ericsson's terms before it led to any ban.

Xiaomi has been banned from selling, importing or assembling its devices in the country until February 2015. During this time Xiaomi and Ericsson will have to work out a deal over royalty payments to the latter in order to restart sales of devices. Until further notice, all flash sales on Flipkart will be canceled.
