Google And LG Enter A Long-Term Cross-Licensing Agreement

The two companies didn't reveal why exactly they've forged the pact, but it does spread across numerous products

Korean manufacturer LG is a growing force in the global smartphone sector, and its current allegiance is with Google's Android mobile operating system. It comes as no surprise then that the two companies have gotten into a cross-licensing deal that will allow them to use each other's patents for the next ten years.

LG isn't the first manufacturer that Google has entered such an agreement with – Samsung, which is the largest smartphone manufacturer and Google's biggest partner, has been doing so for years now. In the case of the LG and Google, both companies have refrained from revealing just why they've forged the long-term pact.

Analysts say there are quite a few possibilities, such as the two companies simply wanting to borrow each others features, with the agreement simplifying the process of licensing and eliminating the chances of lawsuits. There's also the theory that Google doesn't want LG to stray too far from its Android strategy.

In any case, following LG and Google's partnership for the Nexus 4 and 5 smartphones, the Korean company has been rabidly ditching its own services in favor of Google's. Moreover, with Google's relationship with Samsung showing visible signs of strain, the internet giant has grown its efforts to find worthy partners for Android.

Whatever be the reason, it's highly unlikely that we'll see Google and LG battle it out in the courtroom any time soon. Moreover, with the hardware prowess of LG and software know-how of Google, there's clearly potential to see some industry transforming innovations coming in the near future, as the two giants join forces.
