'Ok, Google' Extends Boundary, To Search Within Third-Party Apps

All devs have to do is copy/paste a few lines of code, and viola!

It's incredible how much you can actually do on an Android smartphone through voice commands, but Google doesn't seem content with where it has gotten so far. Most of the Internet search giant's apps and services respond to your voice, but the company now wants users to be able to perform searches within third-party apps using the “OK, Google” hotword.

In order to do so, Google has simplified the process of letting developers turn on the feature to the extent that it takes adding just a few lines of code. In fact, developers can even copy and paste the code published on the Android Developers Blog into their AndroidManifest.xml.

Once this is done, users will be able to search for content within an app purely through voice commands, however we don't expect Google to add any further functionality right now. Motorola has already shown us the future with Active Voice on its Moto X, that allow users to send WhatsApp chats and update their Facebook status only through voice commands.

Further, Google says that users will be able to use the “OK, Google” hotword for search within third-party apps from any screen, just as always. With Google introducing Ambient Voice controls with Android Lollipop, a lot more phones will gain Motorola's always listening functionality, where users literally don't have to touch their devices to control them through voice.
