Google Is Playing A Pivotal Role In PM Modi's Digital India Vision

It's a symbiotic relationship of sorts, tied together by a dream of getting a billion people online

Despite being one of the largest exporters of IT professionals, it looks like India needs a helping hand in creating awareness about the Internet and its uses. In a move that spans across all ages, the Indian government has joined hands with Google to implement its Digital India campaign.

Being the dominant player in the Internet space, Google will now set the regulations for how Indians access the world wide web. The company plans to do this by improving digital literacy and Internet safety, by introducing a curriculum in schools, for officials and elected representatives.

To promote its joint campaign with the government of India, Google will host a pan India contest to develop and app for the PM's Office. The initiative will showcase Indian's prowess in building world class apps, with the aim to bring the PMO to every mobile device user in the country.

Apart from this, Google is also taking on a more pivotal role in the helping PM Modi's Digital India vision come true, by assisting the government at several levels. The company's language ecosystem will play a huge role in allowing the government to reach out to every citizen, given the diverse languages used across the country.

Other programs that help get women and SMEs online and show off India's rich culture and heritage to the world will also be initiated. PM Modi famously said he has the vision of transforming India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy, which goes hand in hand with Google's global dream of bringing the Internet to the masses.

With help from technology giants like Google, the transition from being offline to online can come very quickly, as there's a monetary motivator for them to justify making investments. India is already has the third largest Internet user base in the world, and the country's 245 million netizens make up just a fraction of the entire population.

There's a huge amount of room to grow, and this makes India is prime property for technology companies, who are eying a billion new customers. This isn't a bad thing by any means, as the country needs all the help it can get to become a technology powerhouse, while also aiding the growth of those who help us get there.

“I’m happy Google is coming forward to roll out initiatives that will contribute to the Digital India vision. I’m sure others will come forward and join this moment,” said R.S.Sharma, Secretary of The Department of Information Technology.

India is fast becoming the center of the digital world, and whether we like it or not, we're going to be able to do a lot more online than ever. It will take time, energy and effort to develop a tech prowess of our own, and we should ensure the Digital India vision delivers on that, rather than making us all paying customers to Internet companies.
