Microsoft India Store Hack: Credit Card Details Also Leaked

Emails from the company confirm that some customers' data "may have been compromised".

Earlier this month, reports of Microsoft India Store being hacked had come in. Microsoft had sent out emails to its users saying exposed account details may include non-financial information such as email addresses, passwords, order details, and shipping address. However, now that does not seem to be the case. Fresh reports suggest that, the company has sent out an email to its users confirming that credit card details of some customers may have been compromised as well.

It seems that the online store is being managed by an advertising and digital marketing agency known as Quasar Media, which apparently goofed up by storing confidential data in plain text. The Microsoft Access database was hacked into by a Taiwanese hacking group named EvilShadow. However, since the website is still not up, the wisest thing to do for anyone who has transacted using this service would be to block the credit \ debit card altogether.

In an interview to TechTree, Anshu Mor, from Xbox India said, "We always take the right security measures. More importantly, we aren't new to the online business. We have been hosting MSN and Hotmail for many years now, so we know how data security works. We have the right infrastructure in terms of data centres and security setups". Looks like the guys at Microsoft India didn't employ people with similar prudence to take care of sensitive user data this time around.
