IRCTC’s System Can Now Handle 7200 Ticket Bookings Per Minute

Impressive yes, but we think that there is something else that needs to be worked on as well.

 

The crippled IRCTC system has finally got a big system update which will now allow passengers to book tickets with ease. Yes, the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) which was earlier limited to just 2000 tickets per minute, will now cater to up to 7200 tickets being booked per minute.

The new system update cost the government Rs 180 crore, can now allow up to 1.2 lac users to log on to the system and book tickets to their heart’s content. Thanks to the expensive upgrade, users should in all probability not get thrown out while booking, resulting in a fewer terminated user sessions. But is it enough?

The railways also launched a Windows Phone app last year, which allows users to check train schedules and book with ease while on the move. "Railways are part and parcel of development. It is in the mind of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The PM said all operational part of the railways should be covered online," said railway minister Sadanand Gowda.

Indeed in India and when it comes to the government, anything done online indeed turns out to be a messy affair. With Modi as the PM, lets hope that we see the railway booking process turn out to be a smoother process. Clearly what is needed along with a broader bandwidth for bookings is not more apps, but a user friendly website which the IRCTC currently lacks.
