Users Of New Lumia Devices Can't Set Google As Default Search

It's either Bing Search or nothing for users of the Lumia 630 and Lumia 930

Since Microsoft now owns Nokia's handset division, the latest Lumia 630 and 930 smartphones are coming to you directly from Redmond. While not much has changed from a consumers perspective, TheVerge has stumbled upon the lack of functionality to assign Google as the default search engine in Internet Explorer.

It isn't known if this is the case with the Lumia 630 and Lumia 930 sold in all regions, but looks like a majority of the new devices running Windows 8.1 lack the feature. The physical search button on WP devices has always defaulted to Bing Search, with no option to change it. Now it looks like it could be the same case within Internet Explorer.

TheVerge reports that it's up to phone manufacturers and operators to choose the default search engine on the device, with Nokia offering the option to users to switch to Google. Older Lumia devices updated to Windows Phone 8.1 seem to be unaffected, and the lack of the feature is only present on Lumia devices coming from Microsoft itself.

For users of the affected devices it's either Bing Search or nothing. They'll have to physically search for Google in the search bar in order to access its services directly from the web. Still, since most WP users seem to be inclined towards Bing anyway it shouldn't be a problem. However if you're a user of Google's services on a Microsoft platform, we expect trouble.

Moreover it's a question about the lack of choice Microsoft is subjecting its users to. Google offers Android users a choice to set Bing or Yahoo as the default search engine on Chrome. Even Apple offers users a choice between Google, Bing, Yahoo and even DuckDuckGo on its Safari browser on iOS.
