Was Facebook's Research Far More Disturbing Than We Thought?

Even you could have been a part of the experiment by the reseachers

If you thought that Facebook recent ‘research’ on emotions by tampering with the news feeds was an one off instance, you are wrong.

According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, a former Facebook employee has said that it was very common for Facebook’s Data Science team to manipulate the posts.

The Data science team is a group of around 36 researchers, who have access to one of the world’s richest data – the 1.3 billion Facebook users.

"There's no review process, per se," said Andrew Ledvina, a Facebook data scientist from February 2012 to July 2013, told the newspaper.

Two years ago if you received a message saying that you were being locked out, because Facebook thought that you were robots or using fake names, then you have been a part of the experiment.

While the social network knew that most of them were legitimate, but this was an attempt to test its anti-fraud measures.

He also revealed that the individuals were free to run tests without informing any body and that it was done so often that same users might be used in more than one experiment.

Even though Facebook has said that there have been stricter guidelines for Data Science team, it will take a lot more effort from Fecebook to regain the lost credibility.
