Siri Could Lose Her Voice If Samsung Buys Nuance

The company which started the entire speech recognition trend is up for sale and Samsung seems pretty interested.

Nuance, the company that powers the voice technologies behind Samsung’s S Voice and Apple’s Siri voice assistant, is up for sale. What is more interesting is that Samsung seems keen on buying the company which could spell immense trouble for Nuance’s other client, Apple.

Just the news of the deal was enough for the Nuance’s market cap to jump from valuation of $5.5 billion to a $6 billion meaning that there is clearly an interest among buyers.

Apparently Samsung is not the only buyer and the Wall Street Journal reports that there are a number of private-equity firms in talks for the sale. So far Samsung’s name pops up first because the company has clearly not given up on its S Voice technology which is also present in its GALAXY S5 flagship. Moreover Samsung clearly does not have the software experience to put together a similar technology, which is why Samsung may eventually buy the company.

Does this mean bad news for Apple? Well, the answer is yes; in a way. Apple may end up paying Samsung if the deal goes through. But they need not worry because apple has a lot more experience with building software and knows what consumers want. Compare this to Samsung who seems to be more of a lost puppy with its hit or miss flagships these days.
