Oppo In Talks With Airtel & Reliance Jio For Partnering On 4G Devices

The company believes the key to success in India is providing handsets with fast internet connectivity.

In a bid to gain the first mover advantage in 4G handsets in India, smartphone manufacturer Oppo is in talks with Bharati Airtel and Reliance Jio to bring those devices to the market. The company believes affordable devices with fast internet connectivity is the key to growth in the Indian market.

"Some officials from Reliance Jio were present at the launch (of the Oppo Find 7). We are in talks with them for 4G devices," said Steven Shi, GM at Oppo, according to a Business-Standard report. "4G will definitely be our focus in the days ahead."

Chinese manufacturer Oppo currently has eight handsets on sale in the country, and plans to launch no less than four more models by the end of this year. Currently the cheapest 4G enabled handset the company manufacturers cost approximately Rs 12,990 and is sold in China.

Oppo wants to position itself as a maker of premium smartphones and plans to compete only in the Rs 10,000 to Rs 40,000 price bracket. It has set itself the goal of becoming the second largest manufacturer in the country within the next few years, despite not catering to over 30 per cent of the smartphone market.

"We will compete with Samsung... There are players offering low-cost smartphones but that is not our focus. We will focus on the Rs 10,000-40,000 category," added Shi.

The company already has 4G LTE enabled handsets on sale in India in the form of the recently launched Find 7 flagship smartphone. Oppo is now looking to expand the number of 4G devices in its line-up, but will need support from telecom operators who have to reduce the cost of 4G services to really make any impact on the market.
