BSNL Announces Low-Cost 'Bharat Phone' To Get Everyone Online

The Bharat Phone has been optimised to give users access to the Internet and run e-governance applications.

 

BSNL has announced an ultra-low cost feature phone in India, which has been optimised to access the Internet and e-governance applications. The dual SIM phone has been developed by Pantel Technologies Ltd and will be available from June 15 at a price of Rs 1099.

The 'Bharat Phone' as it has been named, is the first phone in the price bracket to be specifically built for users to access the Internet. It also comes bundled with attractive voice plans from BSNL, apart from the 1200 minutes free talk-time the company is providing.

The device runs Pantel's proprietary Java OS which is built for mobile banking, tele-healthcare delivery and streaming data delivery applications. Users will be able to download audio, video and Java games and apps.

On the specification front, the Bharat Phone comes equipped with a 3-inch display, dual SIM card slots and a 1.3MP primary camera. Powering the phone is a 1800 mAh battery, which according to the company offers 8 hours of talk time and 15 hours of standby time.

"The low-cost mobile device will alter the Indian feature phone industry as it has been designed especially for e-governance applications and optimised for internet access to empower common man," said R.K. Upadhyay, Chairman of BSNL.
