Apple To ‘Revolutionize’ The 3.5mm Jack With Its Lightning Connector

Apparently the 3.5mm headphone jack needs to go on a diet to make space in slimmer future iPhones.

 

Apple clearly wants to change the way we have or have been accustomed to doing things. First they introduced iTunes for music, next up was the iPhone and now it’s that 3.5mm headphone jack which sources say, Apple is all set to replace. The Lightning connector seems to be the right port according to Apple which will indeed get the job done right.

But for that to happen, Apple will need to introduce a new standard to get hardware and accessory manufacturers to follow. This is why the company is soon going to introduce MFi (Made for iPhone). MFi is a new specification which will allow audio equipment manufacturers to design headphones using Lightning connectors instead of the good old 3.5mm headphone jack (expect a Beats headphone soon).

The Lightning connector will obviously remain the same. It’s everything around it that Apple wants to change (like they always do). The connector in its current form already supports audio in/out and can output 48 kHz lossless digital audio and even accept 48 kHz audio from a mic source. While audio input support for lightning cables is not yet supported, an update will be released soon to change the same. The port can also supply power to an amp and if Apple has its way, will even be able to draw power for noise cancelling headsets.

We have no idea whether the new standards are being set for the upcoming iPhone 6, but surely Apple has bigger plans to make money off it. Apple was always said to be an innovator and will even switch from the norm to prove that the Apple way is always right. Clearly the company thinks that the 3.5mm headphone jack is simply too old for their iPhone; both in terms of tech and in terms of the cylindrical space that it takes up.
