Drone Successfully Delivers Pizza For Mumbai’s Francesco Pizzeria

The 1.5 km long journey, certainly dropped jaws in a country with endless restrictions.

Francesco Pizzeria made a successful pizza delivery via a drone in Mumbai. The drone carried the pizza straight out of the restaurant located in Mumbai’s corporate centre, Lower Parel; to a building near the Worli Sea Face area.

The drone safely covered a distance of 1.5 kilometres and delivered the pizza without causing any harm to the neighbourhood apart from the number of excited spectators.

“All of us had read about (global e-commerce giant) Amazon’s plans of using drones. We successfully carried out a test-delivery by sending a pizza to a customer located 1.5 km away from our outlet on May 11,”
Francesco’s Pizzeria Chief Executive, Mikhel Rajani told PTI.

While the video indeed became a hit on YouTube, delivery via drones comes with their fair share of problems. This is especially in India where we have a ton of restrictions when it comes to non-government services. Drones are legally allowed to fly at a maximum height of 400 ft, similar to RC hobby airplanes and helicopters. Moreover, flying over high security establishments is banned as well (you may end up with some gun powder for toppings).

The drones don’t come cheap either, but it certainly reduces delivery time and reduces expenses for businesses that the standard delivery man will incur. For now all we are worried about is Pizza’s dropping from the sky (Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs?).

Drones were made famous almost a year ago when Amazon announced its Prime Air service in the United States for brisk 30 minute deliveries. Soon, many retailers around the world geared up to deliver everything from fast food, to clothing and even stationery and books via drones.
