Google Trumps Apple As The Most Valuable Global Brand

Fast food giant McDonalds is the only non-tech brand in the list of top-five most valuable global brands.

Google has trumped Apple to take the No. 1 spot as the most valuable companies in the world. According to a study commissioned by WPP and conducted by Millward Brown, Google, Apple, IBM and Microsoft are the companies that rank the highest in terms of brand value.

"I think the world is looking at Apple as a brand that created an Earth-shattering revolution, and I think that has slowed down a bit,” said Oscar Yuan, VP at Millward Brown, in an interview with Adweek. “The fact that [Google] doesn’t see themselves contained in one sector is really a testament to their boldness and willingness to try new things.”

Fast food giant McDonalds is the only non-tech company to feature in the top-five of the list, showing the importance of technology in today's world. Other tech companies such as Tencent (14), SAP (19), Facebook (21) and Baidu (25), also feature in the top 25 brands in the world.

While Apple dropped one spot after leading the charts for three years in a row, Facebook was among the companies that made the largest leap, gaining ten spots compared to last year. Rival social networking platform Twitter too marked its debut on the list, ranked as the 71st most important brand globally.

Even companies with not tech backgrounds are moving up the rankings given their increased focus to break the technology barrier. Nike for example inched out Zara as the most valuable apparel brand given its recent focus on fitness tracking.

In the Automobile sector, Toyota ranked in as the top manufacturer, but American auto giant Ford could soon be giving it a run for its money given its focus on technology. “The big story in auto is Ford’s quick rise to the top,” explained Yuan. “In a bid to win over millennials, Ford is pushing hard on the technology.”
